SheddingQ: I have an eight year old golden lab who is constantly chewing on his skin and scratching. i have changed his diet a few times and changed the shampoo i use on him. what else might i try? there are no fleas visable. he does this year round. he also has bumps toward his tail that look almost like boils. A: I would take him to vet to have exam and skin scrape to make sure no parasites. sounds like could be allergies like inhalent allergies which you could have vet test him for. also could have secondary infection from itching which may need oral antibiotics which is why vet visit is important
Miniature schnauzer shampooQ: My vet prescribed sulf oxydex to treat my miniature schnauzer's skin bumps. i could only find oxydex on your website. is there a difference and/or preference? A: Both shampoos contain benzoyl peroxide. however, sulf oxydex also contains micronized sulfur. your veterinarian has determined that the use of the product with micronized sulfur will be more effective for your pet.
Scratching & bitingQ: I have a 4-yr old 80 lb. shepherd / rottweiler mix and is pretty healthy except for an itching problem. when i took him to the vet, she scraped a small section on his hind to examine for mites, etc. there was nothing -- no mites, no fleas to indicate a cause for itching. she put him on 500mg caps of cephalexin. he's been on science diet his whole life along with pet tabs and 3v tabs each day. the vet recommended that he be bathed 4 weeks in a row with malaseb shampoo, which we've done. since then, he's been biting at the area that the vet scraped which is about a quarter in size and slightly raised. immediately after the shampooing, he seems fine but by the end of the week he's scratching again. i thought it was dry skin (i see occasional dandruff-type flakes) but when i pet him, my hands are oily. i purchased an otc ointment called opti-clens, a medicated antibacterial creme to use. what else would you recommend me to do? could it be dry skin due to winter and being closed in the house? what should i be doing? A: Check out her thyroid with a complete blood thyroid panel to make sure not low thyroid. if allergies could be food or inhalent allergies which your vet could work for with blood allergy testing or restricted hypoallergenic diet. also may want to consider a veterinary dermatologist to get to bottom of it
Dry skin& scratchingQ: Hi,we have a 4yr old female bloodhound, her skin got dry and she scratched bald spots on it and was shedding fur this originaly started when her food was switched from iams lamb and rice to diet iams lamb and rice and when i tryed switching back to reg iams lamb and rice this condition went away. now that summer is here i notice same thing happening without change in diet we tried coat supplements in her food and had very small effect. does this food have enough nutrients for a 125# dog? what brand would be better or should we start mixing canned food in with dry? anthing you can suggest would help. thanks jim mac A: Food not total issue here as you are learning. she likely has seasonal inhalent allergies as well in addition to perhaps food sensitivity. i prefer all natural diets such as california natural lamb and rice diet by natura which comes in dry and can. also a good one is wellness fish and potato as well. you will likely need oral antihistamine or anti inflammatory therapy. try benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily in addition to every few day shampooing with corticare shampoo and corticare spray from 1800petmeds which might help as well. if persists see your vet

Scratching: allergy or not?Q: I have a 6 month old black lab named haley. she has been scratching constantly. at first i thought that it might be fleas and i had ran out of frontline so i used hartz. the hartz products don't work really well but i thought it was better than nothing. before i used the flea and tick liquid i gave her a good bath with hartz shampoo. i don't know if i didn't get all of the shampoo washed out,if it's allergies or if its something else. she has crusty red bumps that she is scratching raw. haley needs your help! please give us an answer! she also has been swimming since the shampoo. wouldn't the water get rid of all of the shampoo. could it be mites if nothing else. thanks, edward brown A: Most likely other types of allergies either inhalent and/or food allergies with secondary bacterial infection. should have vet visit as likely needs script for oral antibiotics like cephalexin. also consider chlorihexderm shampoo from 1800petmeds every few days to help for now
